What are some suggestions for refinishing the plastic trim beneath bumpers, over wheel wells, door molding etc. I have seen the "Back to Black" and similar products, but take not used them. I do NOT want to just wipe/spray some production that will make it shine, I want a permanent solution that is satin in appearance when done. Does anyone take experience with any such products? I but bought a CPO 2005 X5 iv.4i and nearly of the plastic trim panels take this faded appearance, which the detail guys prepare with some silicone spray that comes off with the next washing. Any management is appreciated.
  1. I'm not sure if there is the ideal permanent solution, short of replacing perfectly good, admitting faded, trim pieces with new. I retrieve the dorsum-to-black stuff simply tends to hang in there longer than the easy sprays. Pulling the trim to paint it is hardly an platonic solution either - eventually the pigment will lose adhesion and flake off.

Hopefully someone will chime in westward/ their experience in attempting to resolve the problem.

  2. Okay I know this is non the easiest solution, but painting does work very well. I used Dupli-Color Flexible Bumper Coating on my 318i and it fabricated all the faded plastic await new over again. I did this virtually three years ago and information technology however looks really practiced. Here is a movie of my car. The painted surfaces are the black plastic on the bumper edges, acme, and side pieces and the metal mirrors, since they were horribly faded too.

You lot tin can get this paint at any Pep Boys, AutoZone, Advanced Auto Parts etc. It is suggested to practice a primer coat, I did this and I call back if you are going to go to this trouble, might as well to practise it right. Be sure to rough everything up commencement with a 3M Scotch Bright pad (Green). Get every little corner, other wise the paint will scrap. I did two coats of primer, let that dry for a couple hours, and then roughed the primer up with the scotch bright as well. I and so did two or three coats of the bumper coating.

I terminal thing, this pigment has a matte stop to it, so like plastic, wax will get out white marks on information technology!

I know that this will sound crazy, but information technology works. Care for the trim with Kiwi mink oil (the stuff used to waterproof boots). I tried this several years ago and take had success with it on every car I have owned since. I recently told a friend at piece of work about this and he thought I was basics. Only he tried it and was amazed. It may have 2 or three applications if the trim is really bad, just try it. It is also works well if you become white marks from wax on the trim.
  3. Sounds interesting, I call up I volition give information technology a endeavor! :)

Mink oil you say....I would never take thought of that. I have to ask, does it stay tacky or oily? Does it come off when washed with car wash soap? If not, that would be pretty slick and water would certainly run right off equally it is a waterproofing agent. I will effort this on another vehicle commencement to bank check information technology out. If, for some reason, I didn't like the results, it would take a lot of endeavor to remove it to a level that another production could be practical.
Lots of good ideas hither. I will continue to search and report what I discover earlier I "buy & utilize".

Kiwi mink oil is not a liquid, only a very soft paste. Subsequently it is applied, it "dries" and you buff it off similar wax. If you lot get whatever on the paint or windows information technology will buff off. Any surface treated with it repels water. It also lasts a long fourth dimension. It does not work well at temperatures beneath 60-65 F. Information technology does a great job on leather, in detail on dried or cracked leather, merely using it on an entire interior takes several hours, and if you over apply it, it volition rub off on clothing. I guess my time spent shining shoes in a barbershop when I was x provided more then spending coin.

    Refinishing Faded BMW Black Plastic

I have a 2007 X5 and afterwards a motorcar wash I noticed water marks on my window trim. The car was stale inside the car wash immediately after washing. I pointed out the marks to the motorcar wash managing director and he tried a couple of products on information technology and he couldn't get the water marks out. I like you, I tried Black to Blackness when I got home only the water marks showed thru subsequently buffing. I looked on this forum and found your thread. I tried the Mink Oil suggestion in one section and it seemed to work. I then took a shoe shine product called "Instant Shine". Information technology comes in a pocket-size plastic container with a sponge soaked with some kind of oil. I applied that to another section and buffed the heck out of information technology and it seemed to work even better. In a real bad department, I practical the Mink Oil and buffed it with an orbital buffer and that worked. At least it seemed to help deliquesce almost of the water marks although non completely. I followed that up with the "Instant Shine" and it looks as practiced equally new. I don't know if it will concord upwardly after a car launder but I practise know that no matter how difficult I buff the trim, the h2o marks no longer appear and seem to be gone for at present. At least the "Instant Shine" also seems similar a simple solution to getting the shine back in BMW plastic window trim.

Information technology'due south a shame BMW can't produce a product in excess of $threescore,000 that yous can't take to a car wash without screwing up the trim. I've had many vehicles earlier, even several I would never ain again, used all kinds of household detergents on them, lived in areas where cars were table salt licks in wintertime and never had water residue on my black plastic trim after a washing. I wonder if any other X5 owners have this car launder and plastic window trim trouble?

You can use 303 Aerospace Protectant on your weatherstripping and black trim to aid avoid this. Car washes typically uses very harsh chemicals and soaps, and that's why I never run through auto wash. You induce and so many swirls going through a machine wash. For example how many times do you think they clean the brushes after a dirty work truck goes through and then you take your nice BMW in correct after!

Locally (Western MA) there is a chain of motorcar washs called Laser. At that place are no brushes and the car e'er comes out make clean. I exercise not know how they practise information technology, simply they practise. They accept been in business for 6 years. When I can not hand wash my cars, I have no qualms about using them. I wonder if there are whatsoever Laser automobile washs in other parts of the land?
  4. Wipe New is a new production on the market and i used it on the faded dull gray plastic trim on my wife,s Nissan Xterra. It is cracking and information technology has been on now for virtually iv months and notwithstanding looks like new. I bought this at our local Wall-Mart. Follow the directions equally listed on the parcel. It guarantees the polish to last for up to ii years. Can also be ordered online at www.wipenew .com

I think, maybe, there are no permanent solutions, because UV rays, estrus, cold, wet, and even air all accept a degrading effect on plastic resilient enough to exist used in automotive applications. I am with the group on the frustrations of this, but think that it is kind of ironic that we readily accept the demand to maintain/detail our paint, tires, wheels, windows, and even our engine bays, but that darn plastic trim ought to stay looking similar new, doggone it!
I take establish it easier and longer-lasting to employ the products (in my case Back to Black) with a small black foam wedge applicator that you tin get for a couple of bucks per dozen in any paint department. I just brush it on generously (no drips or runs), and allow information technology dry. The wedge end of the applicator gives the control you lot demand not to get the production on painted surfaces. If you lot want it shiny, just get back and lightly vitrify it with a make clean, soft rag. It is also a quick task that you can practice when you take just a few minutes to relax with your car, or do indoors when the weather is bad. I take institute it to be less of a PITA when I don't include it with full washes, but only make it a pleasant diversion when a few spare minutes are found. Let'southward face up information technology - information technology does make a BIG difference on just most any auto that hasn't just been driven off the exhibit floor!
